Why study at a boarding school or private college in the UK?
Academic success – Many independent schools and colleges are among those at the top of league tables for GCSE/SQC and advanced level courses. Over 90 per cent of all sixth-form pupils continue to university, mainly in the UK, which means a student educated at a good independent school has an excellent chance of gaining admission to further or higher education in the UK or elsewhere in the world.
Quality assurance – Rigorous quality checks and statutory requirements for independent schools and colleges, including regular inspection and accreditation, guarantees high-quality and up-to-date teaching methods.
Developing students’ talents, as learners and individuals – Schools provide an all-round education, with a huge variety of extra-curricular activities to nurture the skills, talents and wider interests of students, from music and horse-riding, sports and drama, chess and sailing….
Developing confidence and independence – Pupils are encouraged to participate actively in class and extracurricular pursuits, and to develop an independent approach to learning, an excellent preparation for higher education and life.
Living and studying in quality educational settings – Most independent boarding schools are in beautiful environments with excellent facilities for living, work and play. They have well-equipped and up-to-date science and ICT laboratories, multi-media study centres and libraries, sporting and fitness facilities, some with theatres for music, drama and other performance. They provide a high-quality environment, so that students can study and grow more effectively and parents can be reassured that students are safely cared for in the day, evenings, nights and at weekends.
Learning English in the home of the English language – In addition to providing a world-class education, pupils will gain a greater understanding of the English language and UK culture.
Gaining intercultural skills and understanding – The international nature of independent schools and colleges, and the UK, means that students learn to live, understand, respect and work with people from different cultures and backgrounds, making friends and developing relationships to last a lifetime.
Growing in a caring environment – strong pastoral care and support is a key feature, with staff dedicated to students’ well-being, emphasising good ‘settling in’, alongside academic and personal tutor support, supervised homework and careers counselling for career and life preparation.
Choices in UK education – Independent schools are free to set their own curriculum, so that each school has developed its own style and character. This results in a wide range of schools from which parents and pupils can choose the education that suits their individual needs.
Personal attention – A good student-to-staff ratio makes all the difference to students learning and sense of well-being. According to the ISC in 2015 the average ratio in ISC-member independent schools was one teacher for every 9.2 students, so learning and care can be geared to the needs of the student’s own needs.
